Gorilla Glass Hybrid Windshield

Corning Gorilla Glass hybrid windshield technology is a light-weight innovation set to debut on the all-new Ford GT. Inspired by advances in consumer electronics like smartphones and tablets, the three-layer hybrid window consists of Corning Gorilla Glass, thermoplastic and annealed glass applications. A Gorilla Glass hybrid windshield is thinner than traditional laminate glass, and will improve vehicle performance by reducing weight.

The new hybrid glass uses a multi-layer approach – a pane of toughened automotive-grade formed hybrid acts as the strengthened inner layer, an advanced noise-absorbing thermoplastic interlayer is in the center, and an annealed glass serves as the outer layer. The result is a windshield approximately 30 percent lighter than standard windshield glass.

The new Gorilla Glass hybrid window laminate is thinner and has greater strength than traditional laminate. This reduction in thickness greatly reduces the weight of the glass. The glass is stronger due to advanced processes for contaminant reduction, chemical strengthening, unique edge treatment and laminate construction.

The new Gorilla Glass hybrid window laminate is very exciting news for the automotive industry, but don’t expect to see it on your vehicle any time soon. The cost of producing this glass is very high and really not practical for mass auto production.
